Greetings from Cannes, home of the world famous film festival every May and the not nearly as famous MIPTV & MIPCOM markets every April & October. It's great to get away to the south of France for a week - in theory. The reality is 50-something meetings crammed into four days in a stuffy convention center that, for all intents and purposes, could be located just about anywhere in the world. However, that's not the reason for the title of my post. Why then am I mentioning the lack of glamour in our business? Read on my friends..

For my birthday last month, I received a $30 gift card to AMC theatres. They have a great location close by my residence, lots of theatres, stadium seating, etc. This past weekend, my wife and I headed over there to check out "21" (she's a big fan of "based on true events" films). Two tickets and the #1 combo (popcorn and a soda) later, not only was my gift card tapped, I owed them another $2.00!
$32.00 for one trip to the cineplex...and what did we get for it? Glad you asked that question...
Before Lifesize decided to invest in an Indie horror production last year, our biggest concern was that the film be a real movie and not just a series of torture scenes, a la the SAW franchise. Classic horror films used storytelling, music, cinematography and great acting performances to create suspense and ultimately frighten the audience. Unfortuntately, recent years have brought forth an onslaught of lazy horror - with shocking imagery and gluttonous gore taking over. That's why we're excited and proud to be releasing FEAR HOUSE in April - a true throw back to the old view of making great horror films.
One of the most difficult parts of my job as an acquisitions manager is to distinguish festival acclaim from commercial viability. There is a definite feel at a film fest - those of you who are fortunate enough to attend a few know what I'm talking about. There's a buzz in the air; a feeling that the next screening you attend just might be something truly memorable and special. Why? There's a few reasons, but the two that resonate most with me are:
1. Festival attendees by definition are more open to new/different/experimental films - that's why they are there....
