In trying to up with my top 10 sexy scenes list, I realized it would be much more challenging than I thought, as well as a little intimidating. In making this list, I realized I’m revealing something about myself, but if I am going to be an honest film reviewer, I need to have the courage to do that. I making this list, I realized that nearly half the films on it are from the early 80’s, around the time I was moving from adolescence to so-called adulthood. I guess those moments I encountered when I was first truly becoming sexually aware made a very profound impact on me. Read my list after the fold... Mulholland Dr-David Lynch (2001) The bedroom scene for David Lynch’s masterpiece tops my list. Not only are the two heroines (Naomi Watts and Lara Harring) breathtakingly beautiful, but they are also two heroines we have come to truly care about, as we followed them through their often terrifying mystery. Their love scene is beautifully set up and acted, as the two women strongly convey that they have fallen madly in love with each other. There is true passion on display here-which is rarely given off in movie love scenes. Vertigo-Alfred Hitchcock (1958) A scene does not always need nudity or lovemaking to be sexy and indeed, few scenes in movie history are as erotically charged as the key moment in Hitchcock’s masterpiece. Jimmy Stewart’s detective, the stoolie in a horrifically cruel con, believes Madeline; the love of his life has died-not knowing she never existed in the first place. By chance, he meets Judy, the woman who fooled him (Kim Novak). Obsessively, he follows her, then begins to slowly transform her into Madeline (out of both love and guilt, she lets him). The transformation plays almost like a reverse striptease, as Judy is gradually turned back into Madeline. When the transformation is complete, Stewart, thinking he has just resurrected the love of his life, and Novak exchange a kiss as passionate and erotic as has ever been seen in movies. Fast Times at Ridgemont High-Amy Heckerling (1982)I’m sure every heterosexual male my age knows the scene I’m about to talk about (and if they say they don’t, they’re either lying or living in a cave). Judge Reinhold spies on his sister’s best friend (the gorgeous Phoebe Cates) as she swims in the backyard pool. He fantasizes that she emerges, slowly, from the pool, flirts with him, and walks to him in slow motion. She has the face and body of a Greek goddess, barely concealed by her now famous red bikini. As she edges closer, she pulls off her top, exposing her perfect natural breasts. She then wraps her arms around the back of his head, pulling him toward her for a soft, passionate kiss. Of course, it all comes crashing down when she interrupts the fantasy, catching him “in the act” while in the bathroom. Oh, well. Private Lessons-Alan Myerson (1981)This movie is a sleazefest and not really worth the trouble, save for one scene. The plot: the shady chauffer of a millionaire concocts a scheme where he and an accomplice can blackmail the millionaire’s 15-year old son. The scheme revolves around getting the boy to fall into lust over the new maid (Sylvia Kristel). One night, when Kristel catches the boy spying on her as she prepares for bed, she invites him into her room, tells him to have a seat and proceeds to perform a slow striptease for him. The boy, nervous as hell, is totally under her spell. The scene is tawdry, to be sure, but also captures perfectly the fantasy of many an adolescent boy. Secretary-Steven Shainberg (2002) Maggie Gyllenhall is not a classic beauty, yet I doubt few actresses could have been as flat out sexy in this kinky little black comedy. James Spader (in a role he was born to play) plays a rather creepy, reserved lawyer who hires Gyllenhall for a temp job. Gyllenhall, who has some rather severe psychological issues (such as cutting herself), is rather pathetic at her job. One day, after she makes yet another mistake, Spader cannot stop himself and spanks her. This action is the catalysts for a burgeoning S&M relationship between the two. However, while she is technically the “victim,” she finds empowerment in her role, gradually gaining more and more confidence and sexual awareness within herself. Gyllenhall is both beautiful and ravishing in a late scene where she lets Spader bathe her-though she is the receiver, she is in charge. Risky Business-Paul Brickman (1983)It is somewhat of a shame that Rebecca DeMornay did not have more glamorous career (her career has been solid, but obviously nowhere near the level of her co-star Tom Cruise). She is perfectly cast here as the hooker every young man dreams of finding-but never does. As the teenage Cruise awaits his first sexual experience, she walks in to his living room, almost cat like, and bathed in an erotic blue light. She tilts her head toward him and purrs “Are you ready for me... Ralph?,” knowing full well that he won’t be able to keep his hands off her (not that any man could). The sex to follow is quite steamy, with her fully in control and him knowing he’s having the best sex he’s ever had (will ever have) in his life. The Hunger-Tony Scott (1983)This eerie, underrated vampire tale is best known for a still dazzling, erotic love scene between vampire Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon. When Sarandon spills a blood red droplet of wine on her white blouse, just above her breast, she removes her blouse before Deneuve, leading to a passionate lovemaking session, culminating in the sharing of each other’s blood. For those not afraid to explore the darker shades of sexuality in movies, this is a good place to start. Crimes of Passion-Ken Russell (1984)If one is watching a classic Ken Russell film, one can be assured of three things: 1) it will be over the top; 2) it will be often be offensive; 3) it will have at least one outlandish sex scene. In this sensationally sleazy, wild sex trip of a film, Kathleen Turner plays a fashion designer by day and kinky hooker at night. The film is full of rather bizarre sex scenes, but the steamiest is when she hooks up with a sexually frustrated husband (John Laughlin) and acts out a flight attendant fantasy for him ("We're here to serve you. Please remember that although we may run out of Pan Am coffee, we'll never run out of T-W-A-Tea.") Toe sucking soon leads to a long intercourse session with the lovers, in numerous positions, seen in silhouette against an erotic Japanese print. Don't Look Now-Nicholas Roeg (1973)One of the great horror films also has one of the great love scenes in movie history, one of the few moments where true passion is seemingly captured on the screen. A couple (Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie), trying to recover from the drowning death of their child, leave England for a church restoration project in Venice. While in the hotel room, a playful flirtation leads to passionate lovemaking between the two-seemingly the first time the couple has made love to each other since the death of their daughter (there was for a long time a rumor that Christie and Sutherland did not “fake” it, but actually made love during this scene). In a melancholy, but extremely powerful touch, the lovemaking session is intercut with the couple getting dressed to go out to eat-all our moments, including our most passionate ones, are fleeting. The Full Monty –Peter Cattaneo (1997)What in the world is this film doing on the list, you might wonder? Well, first off, there’s no reason that funny (which this movie, about four unemployed, average looking steel workers form a male stripper troupe that takes it all off for the ladies, is) can’t be sexy at times as well. Second, the climatic strip tease at the end is in many ways as much a male fantasy as a female one: Men want to be wanted and desired by the opposite sex, even if it is all just for show. It’s good for our egos. In the final scene, you can see the men’s confidence growing by the second as they dance for their screaming female audience. The moment where Mark Addy throws his shirt to his wife and she clutches it, obviously aroused and excited out of her mind, is a genuinely sweet moment as well as erotic. Again, this was a difficult list to make. I would love to hear feedback, as well as any choices of your own if you feel like sharing.
